What is a root canal?

Root canal therapy is performed when a patient desires to save a tooth that has had infection or inflammation in the nerve of the tooth. Root canals are performed by carefully removing the infected pulp of the tooth, cleaning and disinfecting the canals and placing a special filling material inside of the canal to seal it.

Signs you may need a root canal

Hot or cold sensitivity

Extreme hot or cold sensitive can be a sign of pulpits (a type of inflammation inside of the tooth). The pain can linger after the exposure to hot or cold and settle into an aching feeling.

Swelling in the gum tissue

Gums with an area that is very red and painful to the touch or have the appearance of a fluid-filled blister or pimple on the gums may be a sign of an abscessed tooth. Some patients may not notice any discomfort along with the blister because it is draining, but this usually means there is an infection that should be treated promptly.

Tooth discoloration

A change in the tooth’s color making it appear darker or more gray than the adjacent teeth can be a sign that the tooth is dying or infected and may need a root canal to save it.
